Modem Testing: Modem testing (Test2 and Test3) was performed once it was determined the most current drivers were installed. Testing uses transfer speeds as a benchmark. These speeds are affected by your modem, your PC's CPU, how busy the server is that you connect to, how busy the network is at the time you are testing and other similar factors. These numbers are benchmarks indicating roughly how efficient the transfer is.

You should only be concerned with significant differences. You should only compare transfer tests with the same or similar files. The files we used were binary files that have already been compressed. Transfer rates should be similar or at least be close to connect speed of the modem when downloading and around 28Kbps for uploads. The upload speed is limited by the constraints of V.90 modem design.

The first test (Test1) of modem performance was to download IE5 (32Mb) from Software Express. Netscape download speeds that were being reported were in the range of around 45.333Kbps and it took 1 hours and 50mins. This test was quite crude for comparison of transfer stats since the throughput estimate changes as the file is being transfered. It is a very good test of whether you modem can stay connected. The next two tests used WS_FTP to upload and download Netscape.exe. Downloads with 56K modems in general are faster because the 56K speeds only work in the download direction by design.

The fastest possible download speed is 33Kbps and typical connect speeds are in the 45-48K range. The fastest possible upload speed is 33.6Kbps although the typical speed is 28.8Kbps. Two additional tests were performed using FTP of Netscape.exe. This file is not very compressible so throughput should be fairly close to connect speed.

Test2: Upload Netscape.exe (5.52Mb) took 1361.8secs averaging 39.76Kbps.
Test3: Download Netscape.exe (5.52Mb) took 649.9secs averaging 77.9Kbps.
