Targus PAUM004 Mini Optical Mouse

I got this tiny gadget in a Targus branded package together with a 4-port Mini-USB hub, a rollaway modem cord for laptops and a softshell laptop case. I paid about $45 for the whole package, which was a decent deal, considering the amount of goodies i got and the price i would pay for them if I got them separately.

The mouse grabbed my attention right away - it looks sleek, the design definitely stands out. Plus to that, it had a little blue LED on the side of the wrist, which, even being not very useful, certainly spices up the look even more. But the moment i got my hands on the mouse i disliked it. The surface is somewhat "slippery" for my palm and fingertips, so after playing Unreal Tournament i felt i had to use some pressure to hold it with my fingers.

Plus to that, the optical sensor is positioned at an angle to the surface, unlike in the older Targus models. This fact makes it very hard to use it "on-the-go', as it performs badly on various surfaces, even wooden tables or tables with plastic top. This wasn't an issue with an older model Targus mouse i had before. So, unless you carry a mousemat with your laptop all the time, the number of various surfaces you can use it on with no problem greatly decreases. One thing that makes it stand out from the rest is the length of the cable. I find it very useful since it gives me more distance to control the cursor without stretching out my hand when i need my laptop at a distance.

Overall, i would rate the product 3 out of 5, mainly for the limited number of surfaces it can be used on. But the mouse is a perfect solution for people using docking stations with their laptops, since the mousemat is there most of the time.
