I have owned a Fujitsu MPG hard drive for the better part
of 5 years now. This is the 5400rpm variety that goes up to ATA100
connectivity.
Advantages:
- liquid bearings! This drive is rather quiet, though not as quiet as its
maxtor competitors. - cheap! This is the most important advantage here, as
the drive is not particularly fast, and does not have any other important
advantages over other hard drives. Disadvantages:
- There may be a problem with the logic chip overheating. I have had this
problem and had to send it back to Fujitsu. Their RMA claim program is
happily quite straightforward and without problems. I had a replacement
drive within 2 weeks sent to me in nice foam packaging by mail.
- At 5400rpm, this drive is much slower than those flying around these
days. A quick look at some of the Sandra scores obtained gives a disastrous
picture: Sisoft Sandra: 10560 KB/s drive index. Overall, this could be a
good hard drive for cheap storage, but I would not recommend it for much
else.
