Sony has increased the storage capacity of its Memory Stick Pro card to 2GB. About half the size of a standard Memory Stick Pro, and can only be used with an adapter in devices that support the standard-sized Memory Stick Pro, the enhanced card also features faster access speeds of up to 80Mbit/s, and has greater durability. If you don't need 2GB capacity, the new card is also available in 256MB, 512MB and 1GB models. Sony has also recently introduced a three-in-one USB 2.0 reader/writer, MSAC-USM1, that accepts Memory Stick, Duo, Pro and Pro Duo media (without requiring an adapter), as well as MicroDrive and Type I and II CompactFlash cards. SanDisk beat Sony to market with its own 2GB Memory Stock Pro card, released earlier this year. Pros: High capacity; faster write speeds; more durable Cons: Expensive Release: In Autumn 2004, Sony is launching a new range of high quality, high performance IC recording media. Building on the huge success of the Memory Stick Pro media range, Sony is introducing a new series of high-speed and basic media lines compatible with a vast array of current Memory Stick Pro devices. |
| The Memory Stick Pro(High speed) media comes in a variety of capacities to meet different user needs and budgets. Recognising the increasing demand - especially among professionals - for faster transfer of large-volume data, such as moving and still images and multimedia presentations, Sony's top of the range model will have a 2GB memory capacity in the standard-size version, supported by 256MB, 512MB and 1GB models in both the standard and Duo-sized media. The whole range stands out for its industry-leading read/write speeds of up to 80Mbit/s (10MB/s), | As well as for its exceptional durability - the new media can operate under temperatures as low as -25°C and as high as 85°C. The combined speed and durability of the Memory Stick Pro (High speed) media makes it the ultimate portable storage device for professionals on the move. Sony is also upgrading its basic Memory Stick Pro media line with new 256MB and 512MB capacities. Sony will launch these in standard and Duo sizes this autumn. The new enhanced line benefits from the same extended durability as the high-speed version, which has a wider operating temperature range of between -25°C and 85°C (compared to the previous range of 0°C to 60°C). The new basic Memory Stick Pro media is also more affordable for high-capacity memory users. The new basic and high-speed version media are part of the Memory Stick Pro format, which was originally developed to provide high-capacity, high-speed performance for next-generation applications. It has a theoretical maximum data transfer speed of 160Mbit/s (20MB/s), while specifying a minimum write-speed of 15Mbit/s to ensure high-quality, real-time recording of moving images. The Memory Stick Pro format is a scalable solution, designed with the future in mind, and will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of users as well as the requirements of new and exciting applications. |
