| Subaru unveiled the 2007 Legacy 2.5 GT spec.B performance sedan at the 2006 New York International Auto Show. The introduction spotlights Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive), a key new technology that enhances driving engagement by allowing the driver to select the level of engine performance.
The 2007 Subaru Legacy is a 4-door, 5-passenger family sedan, sports sedan, or wagon, available in 9 trims, ranging from the 2.5 i Sedan to the 2.5 GT Limited Wagon.
Upon introduction, the 2.5 i Sedan is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, H4, 175-horsepower engine that achieves 22-mpg in the city and 29-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The 2.5 GT Limited Wagon is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, H4, 243-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 19-mpg in the city and 25-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.
The Legacy looks sleeker than previous models, and its dimensions are slightly larger than past editions. Using aluminum for the hood, bumper beams and rear liftgate on wagons helped reduce weight by as much as 180 pounds.
Turbocharged models have a functional hood scoop and a dual exhaust system. Alloy wheels hold 17-inch tires on the 2.5 GT, but other models have 16-inch tires. The Spec B includes 18-inchers.
Another Legacy GT feature, is controlled by a knob on the console which lets the driver select from three drive modes, each with different performance characteristics. 'Intelligent' mode is best for low speed traffic conditions and improves fuel economy. 'Sport' mode is best for most driving and provides improved throttle response. 'Sport Sharp' mode is the most aggressive. Each selection modifies the engine's variable valve timing and electronic throttle response to change the driving fun. A dash display shows the mode changes in graph form, although you don't need to look down to change the mode.
The Legacy GT is much more than just superb traction. Inside, perforated leather seating with seat heaters and power adjustment for front passengers provide a comfortable seating position. Seat side bolsters feel as good on long drives as they do on a winding road. There is ample room up front, but with the front seat adjusted for a tall driver, rear seat legroom is snug. The trunk is large, with 323 litres of space and a 60/40 split rear seat that can be folded for more room. The GT is also available as a wagon if you wish to carry more cargo.
Automatic climate control, power windows, heated mirrors and a moonroof are all standard equipment, as is cruise control, ABS brakes and front, side and side curtain airbags. The interior is attractive, quiet and comfortable. It may sound silly, but the Legacy GT makes you feel like an integral part of the vehicle instead of someone just sitting in the driver's seat. There is lots of room up front but it is a personal space and the car becomes an extension of your actions. There are not many vehicles on the road that make me feel that way.
