Jeep Compass 2007 review

2007 Jeep Compass

2007 Jeep CompassThe all-new 2007 Jeep Compass is a modern-styled Jeep vehicle that delivers fun, freedom, utility and Jeep 4x4 capability, while providing exceptional fuel economy, a long list of safety features and interior flexibility.

Based on the Jeep Compass concept first introduced at the 2005 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, the 2007 Jeep Compass is an all-new product that combines the packaging and functionality of a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car or small pickup. Compass is the Jeep brand’s first front-wheel-drive-based product with a fully independent suspension for comfortable on-road ride and handling and fun-to-drive characteristics. Jeep Compass will be available in both front- and four-wheel drive.

The Jeep Compass uses DaimlerChrysler's 2.4-liter, four-cylinder World Engine, developed jointly for 21st century efficiency with Mitsubishi and Hyundai. It's a solid, sophisticated, 16-valve engine, quieter and stronger than a four-banger was believed capable of being, 10 years ago. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. Emphasis during development of this engine was on fuel mileage; even carrying 3326 pounds, the Compass 4WD with a five-speed manual transmission delivers 25 city and 29 highway miles per gallon, estimated by Jeep.

The Jeep Compass offers a Continuously Variable Transaxle, which performs like an automatic transmission, and it's a doozy. The CVT is optional with the Compass Sport model, and standard on the Limited, where Autostick can be added to the CVT. Autostick enables the driver to shift up and down over six steps, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal. The combination of CVT with six-speed Autostick is the best of both worlds, and works more precisely than the manual/automatic transmissions in many expensive sports sedans.

The safety, ride and handling of the Compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Although, in order to keep the advertised MSRP down, air conditioning and power windows and locks are optional.

The Jeep Compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. Interior features of note include standard side-curtain air bags, premium sound system with two articulating speakers in the liftgate that swing down to face rearward to direct sound outward, dual purpose, self-recharging removable interior lamp in the headliner above the cargo area that can snap out to serve as a flashlight, sliding center armrest with a unique flip pocket for storing a cell phone or MP3 player, vinyl load floor in the rear cargo and easy-care, soil-repellent and anti-microbial textile seat fabric to protect against stains, odours and discoloration.

Jeep Compass will offer customers the confidence and assurance that comes with Jeep 4x4 capability. In addition to its standard front-wheel-drive configuration, Jeep Compass has an available full-time, active four-wheel-drive system with lock mode called Freedom Drive, which gives drivers year-round assurance, as well as the ability to handle rough weather and low-traction conditions. This active four-wheel-drive system is recommended for daily use, including driving in snow and rain.

Added Jeep capability is evident from Compass' 8.5 inches of ground clearance, 21.1-degree approach angle, 32.1-degree departure angle and 21-degree breakover angle with the available 17-inch all-terrain tires.
