Jaguar XK review

2007 Jaguar XK

2007 Jaguar XKThe Jaguar XK has been completely overhauled for 2007. The automaker dubs the redesigned, 2+2 sports car "the most technically advanced Jaguar production car ever built. The lightweight, aluminum XK is a high-performance sports car that retains the luxury of the Jaguar brand.

The XK is available as a 2+2 coupe. A 300-horsepower, 4.2-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic transmission power the car to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds. Drivers can change gears manually with paddles on the steering wheel or by nudging the gear lever.

This next-generation XK has an all-aluminum monocoque body structure like that used for the XJ sedan. The body shell is 31 percent lighter and 90 percent stiffer than the previous XK and its steel chassis.

The body and chassis are constructed with aerospace technology. Aluminum panels, castings and extrusions are joined with rivets or bonded with epoxy. The resulting chassis has high strength and low weight.

Proportioned like a coupe, the XK rides close to the ground and features a steeply raked windshield. The all-aluminum body creates a lightweight yet rigid vehicle — the 2007 XK is 31 percent stiffer than previous steel-bodied models and has an improved power-to-weight ratio.

The oval grille opening is similar to that on other Jaguar models, but the front-wing power vents are new. The rear hatchback pivots on two hinges, moving away from the user's head as it's opened.

The driver-focused cockpit offers body-hugging seats, increased interior space and more headroom than its predecessor. The instrument panel features two round dials on either side of a color display, which shows such information as gear selection and tire pressure warnings. Keyless entry and a push-button start are possible with the Jaguar Smart Key system.

Standard equipment includes DVD navigation, keyless entry and keyless start, a seven-inch video display, Bluetooth capability, cruise control, a 6-CD/MP3 player, rear park assist, cruise control, and electronic parking brake.
