Canon EOS 400D

Canon EOS 400DThe Canon EOS 400D is a clear improvement over the 350D. The sensor has been upgraded to 10.1MP, though users shouldn't really see a dramatic difference in image sharpness. The buffer size has been increased, the LCD size is larger, there are more AF points, an RGB histogram mode has been added as have picture styles. There is now an ultrasonic sensor cleaning mode to remove dust from the sensor. I think the update from the 350D to the 400D is more significant and worthwhile for users than the 20D to 30D update was.

The Canon EOS 400D is limited to ISO 1600, so perhaps any xtra noise will not be noticeable - or maybe Canon have worked miracles and it will actually be lower! Reports of the Sony Alpha suggest it has higher noise then the EOS 350D, but it uses a Sony CCD sensor rather than a Canon CMOS sensor as is used in the EOS 400D. Canon do suggest in their press release that despite the increased pixel density they have developed an APS-C CMoS sensor that is comparable in noise performance to their earlier 8MP sensor. This is good news since the Canon CMOS sensors are known for their excellent high ISO low noise performance.

A new interesting feature of the Canon EOS 400D is the integrated dust removal system which offers three methods. First, after turning on the Canon 400D removes all dust via ultrasound vibration. This procedure may take one second, but can be interrupted any time by just pressing the shutter release button halfway down, so you'll never miss an important shot. Second, via software (Digital Photo Professional 2.2) where the image is cleaned through some kind of calculation. And last, remove the dust by hand. The old method where you lock up the mirror, shutter curtain opens en you may be able to blow away any dust on the sensor.

The features of the Canon EOS 400D include:

  • A 10.1 MP CMOS sensor (3888 x 2592 pixels)
  • APS-C (1.6x) format, EF-S lens compatibility
  • 2.5" LCD screen
