Compact, sleek enclosure has been designed for reliable performance. I've been using the HD080U2FE-54 external hard drive from Acom Data for a few months, and I have to say this is one of the best gadgets i've bought in years! Acom data makes these drives in different sizes, speeds and connections. I've been using an 80gb version with both firewire and USB 2.0. The transfer rate is very fast, especially with firewire, which is slightly faster than USB 2. It also works in USB 1.1, but at a very reduced speed. |
| Now, one of the most important aspects of removable drives is portability. This is where some people might be a little put-off. It uses 3.5" hard drives, which is kind of cumbersome and requires a power adapter, even if you can provide power over your firewire port. Even with it's size, it fits well into any briefcase or backpack. My biggest worry has always been how long will it last; I've been surprised how sturdy it is. I've been carrying it around with me a lot, taking a few knocks and bumps with no noticeable damage to it. I've found it very useful for backups. Even though the manual says it's not supported, it works very well with Norton Ghost 2003 And Ghost 8. | It also works well under Linux, it appears as a scsi hard drive (at least it did on Suse). You can have it work under Dos, you just need to find the appropriate drivers; the ghost boot disks have them As a side note, you can upgrade it by inserting a bigger hard drive if you need to. Just be aware that this will void your warranty. |
