There are the things I look for in a notebook/ Tablet PC, some of which include speed, battery, durability, and weight. I found that the Acer C300 fails many on my personal requirements.

I will preface this by saying I’m not bashing, just giving an honest end user review, so take everything with a grain of salt.

Ok, I’ll stop ripping it apart now.

Final thoughts.

As a toy junky I would be ok with this design, but as a Road Warrior, or as a Medical Professional, I would not.

My wife works at a Veterinary clinic, I’ve been trying to convince her boss that he NEEDS tablet PC’s to be more productive. I could not in good faith hand him this and expect him to not break it with in 2 or 3 days of use in a real world environment.

  1. Weight: this tablet PC does have some nice features, but it’s far too heavy for everyday use as a notebook, not to mention my arms got tired of toting it around as a tablet.

  2. Speed: Not bad standard Centrino ® speeds, Although I did notice some hiccups playing DVD’s with a full battery charge. I did see that the screen dimmed after a few seconds of playing a DVD( I’m sure that it can be set somewhere to stop that). In some of the drawing applications, the “brush” wouldn’t keep up with my drawing, and oft missed the mark when I was drawing

  3. Durability: I personally am about as hard on laptops as anyone should/could be. I was, however gentle with this one. The hinge seems like it will maybe last 6mo( if you are lucky) The Screen doesn’t show any signs of use after I did some drawing on it . The stylus should feel more substantial and the eraser Feel like it’s scratching the surface( it doesn’t as far as I can see)

  4. Tablet functionality: The stylus (as stated before) feels cheap, for the amount of money someone has to spend on this computer, they could have thrown in a metal version that feels more like a pen. The tip is too sensitive by default, and more over, it’s not a constant 1/8” should be it’s maximum range I would prefer mandatory contact with the surface. Also I’m a little put out that I had to go in to the control panel and force it to go to left handed mode. No volume control in tablet mode . Glare… too much, my eyes started to hurt after looking at the screen under the florescent lights here in my office . The IR port (if using in left-handed mode) is on the bottom, not very useful. The DVD-+R/RW is a nice add, but it’s tray load, it would have been nice if it was a slot load. USB, 1394, S-Video, and NIC/Modem very nice to have onboard. The Cardbus (type 1 or 2 ) is on the bottom (left-handed mode) so is the smart card reader, this can be seen as a minor annoyance, due to the fact that it has BT, WIFI built in.
